Craig Goch Dam, Elan Valley

The Craig Goch Dam is a masonry dam in the Elan Valley of Wales and creates the upper-most of the Elan Valley Reservoirs. It is often called the Top dam. Elan Valley  is a river valley situated to the west of Rhayader, in Powys, Wales, sometimes known as the “Welsh Lake District”. Total area of the valley is  70 square miles (180 km2) of lake and countryside. Elan Valley is  famous for its picturesque scenery.

The Craig Goch Dam started to build at in 1897, and it was completed in 1904. It is located at a height of 1040 feet (317m) above sea level. The main purpose of the dam and the other reservoirs is to supply Birmingham with water. A 480 kW hydroelectric generator began operation at the dam in the 1997.
