4 Types of Window Coverings Best Suited for Children’s Bedrooms

Windows in children’s bedrooms provide fresh air, natural light, and a great place to display window clings. To properly accentuate these windows, good window coverings are key. The challenge with having window coverings in a child’s room, though, is that the covering needs to be safe in addition to being stylish. Fortunately, there are many good options available that can grow with your kids over time.

Room-Darkening Curtains

To help your children sleep better, room-darkening curtains make a great option. These curtains, made from a heavier material than normal curtains, block out most of the light streaming in from outside. This is especially helpful in the summer when the sun rises early and sets late since your children will likely still need to sleep even when it’s light outside.

Shutters

For good light control and simple operation, shutters are an excellent choice. Shutters can be moved up and down to control how much light enters a room and can also be opened like doors to provide access to the window. Given the lack of cords, shutters make a great safe option for children’s bedrooms so that you don’t have to worry about your kids being strangled.

Valance

Sometimes, all you want in a child’s bedroom is simplicity. One of the simplest window coverings is a valance. Since valances are short, only covering the top of the window, you don’t have to worry about them getting in the way while your kids are playing. Plus, since valances are smaller, they tend to be less expensive, meaning that you can easily switch them out as your child’s tastes change.

Cellular Shade

To provide privacy for your child’s bedroom while still maintaining safety, cellular shades are one option to consider. Unlike mini blinds that require a cord to go up and down, cellular shades are raised and lowered simply by moving the shades themselves. While most cellular shades don’t block much light, they provide plenty of privacy so that your children can change clothes in their bedroom without fear.

For an extra-special touch for the window coverings that you choose, you can allow your children to aid in the design. If you choose a fabric window covering, there are companies that can take your child’s artwork and print it on the fabric, creating a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that your child will adore. Even if you don’t use their artwork, though, it’s still important to get your child’s input on their room’s window coverings since they will be the one who sees it most often.
