Kalemegdan is the core and the oldest part of Belgrade and for centuries the city population was concentrated inside the walls. The history of the fort is almost as old as the history of Belgrade. The exact date of construction of the fortress is not known, but for the first time in historical records is mentioned in the third century BC.
