30 St Mary Axe aka London Gherkin – a Modern Skyscraper or Advantage in the 21st Century

People always will be marveled exclusively of old buildings and works of art. Those masterpieces are still interesting, but as the world moves on, a new wonders appears constantly that should not go unnoticed. From now on, attractive tourist destinations are not only ancient constructions, but the pieces of modern architecture. The fusion of the old with the new is a result of top achievements and dramatic look.

An example of such a modern building is the London Gherkin. The skyscraper also is known as 30 St Mary Axe due to the name of the street on which it is located. The Gherkin is one of the most breath – taking and eye – catching objects in London. Within 180 meters height it stands on the former site of the Baltic Exchange. Designed by Norman Foster it has 41 storeys and was built of modern glass and steel in 2004. This facility with adjustable space not only provides a wonderful view of London, but is also a great space to work.

Good news is that you can visit the London Gherkin during Open House week-end every September. Despite the long wait in line with the crowd, to get in it is an unforgettable experience. The lucky ones who managed to see the exterior and interior of the building were impressed by its construction and the magical landscapes of London that you can capture from the huge windows.

The London Gherkin has a steel frame with circular floor plans and a glass facade with diamond-shaped panels. It is made to use energy-saving methods. The top offers spectacular views of the British capital, but unfortunately the skyscraper is not open to the public. But, exactly 365 days a year, anyone entering the building must pass through security routine to ensure that everything is fine. It is one of the most recognized towers in London and its unique energy design has won many awards such as the London Region Award, the Stirling Prize and the Emporis Skyscraper Award.
