What to Pack for a Trip to Belize

Whether you are looking for an action-packed adventure or a Caribbean style beach holiday, Belize is the destination for you! Nestled on the north eastern coast of South America, Belize offers a plethora of wildlife, activities and culture for both the energized and laid-back traveler. Here is a quick guide on what to pack if you are heading there any time soon.

The Weather in Belize

Belize offers a tropical climate and can reach the triple digits on very hot and humid days in April and May. Late November to mid-April is the best time to visit Belize as this is the dry season which brings clear skies, hot days and less humid conditions to explore in.

If you prefer to visit when there are less tourists, you can plan your trip for the off-season which is also the wettest season. September and October are especially wet, so pack your umbrella or raincoat if you intend on exploring the outdoors.

You will need to pack your sun hat, sunglasses and light clothing to survive the warm temperatures. Leave the jumpers, jackets and leggings at home, because you won’t need them in Belize.

Hurricanes have been known to cause havoc in Belize, so tourists should always invest in travel insurance as this will cover you in the event of flight cancellations, medical cover and lost or stolen luggage.

Things to Add to Your Itinerary

If you plan on staying in the southern part of the country, consider a Belize Eco Resort that will cater for all your lodging and tourist needs. A jungle eco-resort may be just what you need to break away from the hustle and bustle of city life to enjoy the serene and tropical offerings of Belize.

For the adventurous or fit tourists, add canoeing, fishing, mountain climbing, cave exploration, snorkeling or scuba diving to your itinerary. Pack your sunscreen, hiking boots and swimming gear for these activities. These activities are normally full day trips, so remember a light backpack too!

For those that need to recharge and reenergize, consider spending a lazy day in a hammock, bird watching, guided eco walks, yoga or a massage. Pack a book or your Kindle to enjoy on the banks of a river or a beach to unwind.

Belize Culture

Although English is the official language of Belize, Belizean Creole is the national language throughout the country. If you can speak Spanish, you will be able to communicate with many people in Belize too. The Belize Dollar is the currency used and is very close to the ratio of the American Dollar.

Be on the lookout for the amazing wildlife Belize has to offer. Look for jaguars, ocelots, howler monkeys, toucans or armadillos in the sanctuaries or the jungle – pack your binoculars! If you intend on exploring one of the many Cayes Belize has, remember to pack a water bottle and stay hydrated.

Visiting the small country of Belize will be a holiday you will not soon forget, as it is considered one of the most popular eco-tourism destinations.  Whether you want to explore the Mayan culture, pristine beaches, tropical rain forests or the barrier reef, Belize won’t disappoint.
