Huge sand sediment for which some would say that is a desert looks fantastic. The dunes are located near the city of Saitama on the island of Honshu, Japan. They are widespread on 30 square kilometers, which is certainly not a small area. Tottori Sand Dunes are created by transferring the deposited sand on the Chugoku Mountains across the river Sendai in Japan Sea. Currents facilitate sand from the sea floor to climb towards the coast. Wind constantly animated various forms with the sand. The highest dune has an altitude of 90 meters.
The Tottori Sand Dunes are old more than 100,000 years, but their area is constantly decreasing due to the government forestation program, which was made after the Second World War. In addition, there are concrete barriers raised to protect the coast from the tsunami that prevent currents to bring new quantities of sand on the shore.
Although technically the Tottori Sand Dunes not represent a desert, in the summer hot days the temperature of the sand can climb to 50 degrees Celsius. At the Tottori Sand Dunes also grow plants that can be successful in those conditions and there can be found specific animals too. There you can ride a camel if you like and the sea is really beautiful. This mini desert or the famous Tottori Sand Dunes attracts more than 2 million visitors each year, mainly from Japan and East Asia.
