In order to mark certain events, to preserve and maintain the religion or to honor a person, people often build a monument or temple. Those are things that remain long years and carry a message of the importance of what is built.

Such construction is Borbodur. Borbodur is the biggest Buddhist complex in Southeast Asia, which is precisely located in central Java, 40 km northwest of Jakarta. In fact it is a huge temple that resembles a pyramid dating from the 9th century. Borbodur, according to some estimates is mysteriously abandoned around the 14th century and fell into oblivion until its discovery in 1814. Over the years of its existence the temple suffered major damage from weather and vegetation of the jungle. The earthquake also occurred in 1548 contributed to complete destruction. After discovering the Borbodur, Indonesian government in 1955 conducted a rescue plan. The work of the temple began in 1973 which took ten years and the renovation was completed in 1983.

Borbodur is built on 9 floors, of which six are square and the last three floors are circular. From the first floor upwards every floor narrows and because of that, this temple looks like a pyramid. The building occupies 60,000 m3 or 2,000,000 stone blocks. From the foundation, his sides are long over 123 meters. At the whole structure of the temple is disaggregated 504 Buddha statues and 2,672 other items that describe the life of Buddha. The main dome, located at the top of the pyramid is surrounded by 72 smaller domes. Borbodur is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1991.
