How to Turn Your Love of Travel into a Career
Deep down, we all long to explore the world. From the first time you leave your home country, only discover a new world of exciting cultures, new genuine cuisines and buildings and landscapes that you wouldn’t believe existed. For most people, travelling the world and seeing all it has to offer is the dream.
With tools such as the Internet and smartphones, you can easily book a flight now to fly to the other side of the world tomorrow in a matter of minutes. It’s that easy. However, when you have to think of things like jobs and money, this is where things get complicated. Although, it doesn’t have to be.
Today, we’ll explore multiple ways you can transform your lust for travel into a career, giving you everything you need to travel till your heart’s content.
Become a Travel Photographer
Let’s be realistic. It’s not going to be as easy as picking up a camera, catching the next plane to Iceland and photographing for a high-end travel website. It takes years of training and experience to get to that stage. However, if you’re a bit handy with a camera, why not sell your photos for stock imagery. The internet is full of imagery, and there are always companies and websites looking for photos to use in their products.
Sites like Shutterstock enable you to sign up to upload your photos as a contributor. You’ll get paid a small amount every time your pictures are downloaded in tiered sections, so make sure you upload as many pictures as possible!
Become a Freelancer
This may be a little less interesting than taking photographs, but you still get to travel the world. One of the fastest growing industries in the world is the freelancer industry and businesses of all sizes are starting to realise the potential this industry can have. Sites like Upwork, Stateofwriting, Viawriting and Revieweal, allowing you to sign up and create an account which you can then bid for jobs. On Upwork, you can choose from writing jobs, graphic design jobs and even administration and customer support jobs. If it’s a business role, you can be sure they’ll be a job post.
The majority of these jobs will allow you to work simply from a laptop using your own creativity and initiative. This means you can work from wherever you are, whether you’re sat on a beach in the South of Thailand or enjoy an authentic coffee brunch on the streets of Venice. Don’t forget your Wi-Fi dongle!
One of the most common forms of continuous long-term travelling is to become a teacher. If you specialise in any subject that’s fantastic as you can teach that. However, for those of us that aren’t teachers, the best way to go about it is teaching English. This means you can travel to any part of the world and teach adults, students, children, whoever needs to be taught. All you need is a qualification, such as a TEFL, a relatively easy qualification to obtain if you speak English fluently, and the drive to succeed!
In addition to teaching classes, alternatively, using the same degree, you could privately tutor students, for example, at Student writing services or Best British essays. You can easily set up a website to advertise your services and look online for families who are privately looking English tutors. Once you’ve found a position, simply fly over to the country and get started, using your days off to explore the world around you.
Jack Halesworth, a freelance writer for Academadvisor and a travelling tutor explains; “Private tutoring may seem like a difficult industry to enter, especially if you have little experience and no contacts. However, if you complete an hour of research a night and look up what kind of tutor you would like to be and sites that are dedicated to advertising tutor jobs, you could be set up within the week!”
Travelling the world with nothing but a laptop and your belongings may seem like a pipe dream to some but it’s a lifestyle that more and more people around the world are adopting and making a reality. Get ready to say goodbye to the standard 9 – 5 hours and say hello to freedom, adventure and the chance to be your own boss!
